Fake Microsoft support popup? Do not call.
A loud warning with a phone number is a scam. Microsoft does not put its phone number in a popup. Here is what to do.
The short version
- Do not call the number
- Do not click anything in the popup
- Do not install any support tool
How to close it
- Press Alt and F4 together to close the window.
- If it will not close, press Ctrl, Shift and Esc to open Task Manager. Select your browser and choose End task.
- When you open the browser again, do not restore the old tabs.
- In your browser settings, look at notification permissions and remove any site you do not know.
- Run a scan with Windows Security.
What if I already called?
Hang up. Do not pay them. If they got into your computer, or you gave a card number, call your bank right away and change your passwords from a different device. Then call us. We will clean the computer and check what was left behind.
Real Microsoft
Microsoft does not cold call people and does not post phone numbers in browser warnings. If a screen is begging you to hurry, that is the scam.
