What is going on
You open a workbook and Excel says the file is corrupted and cannot be opened. Other versions of the message say Excel found unreadable content or cannot open the file because the format or extension is not valid.
An .xlsx file is a package of many small parts, so one bad part can block the whole file even when most of it is fine.
What usually causes it
- Excel or the computer crashed while the file was saving.
- The file was copied or downloaded and the transfer was cut short.
- A USB stick, a network drive or a sync tool damaged the file.
- The file was renamed to a different extension, or a macro or add in broke the workbook.
What to do first
- Copy the file first and work on the copy.
- In Excel choose File, then Open, pick the file, click the arrow beside the Open button and choose Open and Repair.
- Look for an earlier version in file history or in a backup.
- If Open and Repair fails, send me a sample.
How I fix it
I open the workbook package and pull out the sheets, values and formulas I can read. Then I rebuild the workbook so it opens clean. I tell you what came back, including anything I could not save.

Will Open and Repair fix my file?
It works on light damage. When it fails, the data is often still in the file, and it can be pulled out of the pieces by hand.
Can you save a file that Excel will not open at all?
Often, yes. Sometimes only part of a workbook comes back, and I tell you that up front. The sample check shows what is likely.
Is the sample check really free?
Yes. You tell me what broke and send a small sample. I tell you what I see and what I think can be saved. If you want the full job, I send a quote first. Nothing starts without your yes.
